When in Rome

The last time I was in Rome was 5 years ago, when I was 13. My visit to this magnificent city with my mom was therefore undoubtedly different this time. This trip was a perfect way to celebrate the end of IB but also an opportunity to get some serious bonding time. I’m very lucky that my mom and I love to do the same things, and I can say with great confidence that this was the perfect trip for us.

Because we lived at the Inn at the Roman Forum, a few minutes from both the Colosseum and the Forum, it was natural for us to visit these places first. We then proceeded to walk around the city, looking for a place to eat lunch. My mom is in love with Rome and has visited many times. Last fall she was even part of a ten-day photography course there with Morten Krogvold, one of Norways best photographers. She led us to a tiny family-run restaurant with a set menu, three old women in the kitchen, and a 70-year-old waiter who insisted on showing us how to eat pasta properly. Apparently you are supposed to pick up all the sauce by twirling the pasta around the plate. My favorite moment was when the old man asked us “red wine, or white?”; it wasn’t even a question of whether or not we were having wine. It was a given. Sometimes homemade is the best.  Img_20140519@12_37-5Img_20140519@12_37-3Img_20140519@13_30-2Img_20140519@12_21When in Rome… eat a homemade meal and drink wine from ceramic mugs.2014-05-19 20.27.26Img_20140519@15_35After the delicious meal we went to Campo de Fiori, where we continued to explore.Img_20140519@17_27-2Img_20140519@16_50Img_20140519@16_16-2Img_20140519@16_09Img_20140519@17_08Img_20140519@15_47-2Img_20140519@16_57When in Rome… stroll around, soak in the sounds and smells and sights. Feel history unfolding itself around you. Img_20140519@15_43Img_20140519@15_39We walked into a church by the Campo de fiori and found three Caravaggio paintings. It was magical, and I almost felt myself t becoming religious.Img_20140519@13_29-2Img_20140519@17_45Img_20140519@13_25-2Before dinner we sat down at the piazza by the Pantheon and enjoyed mimosas and champagne. There was a hilarious clown who walked around pranking people. For example, a fat man walks past and the clown immediately runs to his bag, pulls out a huge white bra, and asks him if he needs it! He also whistled at several angry-looking (and might I add unattractive) old women. They didn’t find it funny, but the 30 of us watching did ;D   L1007779L1007788Later for dinner we ate at a local seafood restaurant. It all made for a truly fantastic first day in Roma.Img_20140519@14_11Img_20140519@13_17Img_20140519@18_20

Aw, this was a really nice post. Taking a few minutes and actual effort
to generate a top notch article… but what
can I say… I procrastinate a whole lot and never seem to get anything done.
